William H. Saunders, MD a Triological Society Fellow since 1961, 1985 Triological Society President and 1969 Triological Society Middle Section Vice President, passed away on March 5, 2018.

Dr. David Schuller informed us of the passing of one of our long time Fellows and Past Presidents, William H. Saunders, MD. Dr. Saunders served as Vice President of the Middle Section in 1969, and later served the Society as President in 1985. He was a Triological Society Fellow for 57 years, inducted as an Active Fellow in 1961. Dr. Saunders served as a Council member in 1968 and from 1981 through 1983. I am certain many of you recall Dr. Saunders and his wife, Putzi, attending COSM as well as other ENT meetings to work on behalf of the Deafness Research Foundation. Dr. Schuller forwarded the statement below which extols both the clinical and artistic successes of Dr. Saunders.

“William H. Saunders, MD expired at the age of 98 on March 5, 2018. Dr. Saunders was a long time fellow of the Triological Society and served it as a member of the Council and also as the President. After completing his residency at the University of Michigan, he joined the faculty at The Ohio State University where he rose to become Chair of the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery until his retirement from that position after 21 years as Chair. He co-authored the Textbook of Otolaryngology with David DeWeese, MD which became the best selling textbook of the specialty for several years. Dr. Saunders was a long serving Director of the American Board of Otolaryngology and served that organization as Vice President. He was also inducted into the American Laryngological Association. Dr. Saunders possessed many non-medical talents including being a registered gemologist. He and his wife, Putzi, combined their artistic talents to design jewelry which was sold at national Otolaryngology meetings to benefit the Deafness Research Foundation. In addition, he was an award winning weaver of tapestries that were initially designed by Putzi. Dr. Saunders was an excellent clinician and teacher whose efforts impacted the lives of thousands of residents and medical students and hundreds of thousands of patients during the course of his illustrious career.”

Dr. Schuller advised that a memorial service will not be held. For those of you who wish to send your condolences to Mrs. Saunders, we are happy to accept cards addressed to her at our office and will forward your condolences to her. Our address is 13930 Gold Circle, Suite 103, Omaha, NE 68144.
